A letter from the vestry, 44 years on

A letter turned up in our chapel vestry recently, left by a visitor with no way to trace her – just a note, addressed to our chaplain, Sister Bernie.
The letter reads:
To Sister Bernie, It was a great joy for me to come here to Mildmay after 44 years. In 1982 I was working here as a nurse. After my time here I was prepared for going to the mission field to Pakistan for 10 years. Now I wanted to show to my family the place I worked as a young girl. God bless you, Monika
In 1982, Monika was a young nurse at Mildmay. From here, she went on to spend ten years serving on the mission field in Pakistan. This year, more than four decades later, she came back – this time with her own family, to show them where it all began.
We don't recognise Monika's surname, and she left before we had the chance to thank her in person. But her note is a reminder of something we see often at Mildmay: the people who pass through here carry it with them for a very long time.
That kind of lasting impact is exactly what our Summer Appeal is raising funds for right now, supporting Mildmay's work caring for people living with HIV in Uganda.
