From origins to closure in 1982

These photographs offer a glimpse into the early history of Mildmay Mission Hospital, from its Victorian origins in London’s East End to its closure in 1982.

From Mildmay's re-opening in 1985 to the present day

In 1982, Tower Hamlets Health Authority determined that Mildmay should be closed down. By 1985, it had reopened - no longer part of the NHS, but as a voluntary charitable hospital outside it.

The Bert Miller Photographic Archive

During some alterations to the hospital, Albert Miller, who worked at Mildmay for 7 years and was a volunteer for 23 years, saw some photo transparencies lying in a skip. On inspection, he found that they were photographs of the Mildmay and staff dating back several decades.
