Mildmay Kenya
Mildmay's work in Kenya began in the 1990s as part of our global response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Mildmay International established Mildmay Kenya in 1998, and it was formally registered as a local NGO in 2003, working with communities around Kisumu, Siaya and Homa Bay on the western shore of Lake Victoria to strengthen health systems and expand access to HIV care.
Over more than two decades, Mildmay Kenya delivered HIV care and community health worker training, ran the Boresha project supporting prisoners and children affected by HIV, refurbished the health centre on Mageta Island, and operated as a Global Fund sub-recipient across Siaya, Bondo and Teso South.
At the end of 2024, Mildmay Kenya became a fully independent organisation under its own board of trustees. Mildmay UK's direct involvement and funding ended at that point. Mildmay Kenya continues its work independently, including through the Bondo Youth Wellness Centre.

Boresha: From 2010 to 2013, Mildmay Kenya and Mildmay Tanzania delivered 'Boresha', a bold multi-country initiative supporting vulnerable groups affected by HIV in Kenya and Tanzania. The programme was part-funded by the European Union.

Safe Motherhood Project: Donor support funded an emergency tuk‑tuk ambulance to serve the 12,000 inhabitants of Mageta Island, improving access to maternity care, HIV services and outreach across difficult terrain.
Magnet Theatre Project: By working within communities in Siaya County, the Magnet Theatre Project brought young people together to engage with HIV and sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR), and to demand access to related services.
Mageta Island Health Centre refurbishment: To improve healthcare standards and encourage wider use of the clinic, we repaired and refurbished the health centre on Mageta Island.
Global Fund for HIV Programmes: Strengthening community‑based services across Siaya, Bondo, Samia, Teso South and beyond.
Bondo Youth Wellness Centre: The Centre provides adolescents with accessible sexual and reproductive health services alongside education and social activities, helping them build the knowledge, confidence and support networks they need to make informed choices about their health.
