Breaking Down Barriers on World Hepatitis Day 2025

Updated: Jul 28

Every 30 seconds, someone in the world loses their life to a hepatitis-related illness. That’s more than 1.3 million lives every year.

Yet hepatitis remains one of the most neglected global health crises - despite being preventable, treatable, and, in many cases, curable.

This World Hepatitis Day (28 July), we stand alongside the World Hepatitis Alliance and partners across the globe in calling for urgent action to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030.

At Mildmay Hospital, we know that people at the sharpest edges of inequality - those experiencing homelessness, poverty, stigma, or living with complex conditions like HIV - are often the same people at higher risk of viral hepatitis. Our work in providing integrated, trauma-informed healthcare means we meet patients where they are, offering compassionate care that considers the whole person, not just their diagnosis.

This year’s theme, “Let’s Break It Down,” challenges us to break down barriers to hepatitis care: low awareness, misinformation, stigma, and systemic inequity. At Mildmay, we advocate for earlier testing, better access to treatment, and destigmatising conversations around hepatitis, HIV, and other blood-borne viruses.

Did you know?

  1. Over 300 million people are living with hepatitis globally—most without knowing it.

  2. Hepatitis B and C are the second deadliest viruses in the world after COVID-19.

  3. 57% of people with hepatitis C say they struggle to disclose their status due to stigma.

Hepatitis disproportionately affects people who face discrimination in accessing health services. That’s why equity is central to elimination.

On World Hepatitis Day, we reaffirm our commitment to:

• Promoting access to testing and treatment for all

• Raising awareness through training and advocacy

• Providing expert care for people with complex HIV and hepatitis co-infection

Together, we can break it down. Get the facts. Take action.
