Patients, Staff and Volunteers Celebrate 40 Years of Mildmay

Yesterday, staff, volunteers, and patients at Mildmay Hospital came together to celebrate 40 years since our re-establishment as a charity in 1985, after which we began our pioneering work in HIV care.

The party brought everyone together for an afternoon of community and a chance to appreciate our shared journey.

The events kicked off with a warm welcome from our CEO, Geoff, followed by a blessing from our chaplain, Sister Bernie. We enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch, made extra special by additional diverse dishes generously brought in by staff, reflecting our vibrant cultural mix.

After lunch, Teri (our matron and registered manager) cut the cake (a very longstanding tradition here at Mildmay) followed by a lively performance in our new Conservatory of a specially composed Mildmay song , enjoyed by patients in the garden, followed by a welcome treat of lollies for all. Unfortunately, for most of us, the celebrations ended there, as duty called and we returned to our work.

The successful day highlighted the incredible collaborative spirit we have had here at Mildmay for 40 years (and more). A special thank you to Memory for taking the lead on organising the event, and to the nursing team who went above and beyond decorating the rooms and creating attractive table settings, helping her bring everything together so wonderfully. We're also very grateful to Sister Bernie for her constant presence and contributions.

This celebration genuinely showed what makes Mildmay so unique and strong. It was a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the compassion, commitment, and deep sense of community that continue to define everything we do. Staff came and went as they were on duty, but many of our teams – including nursing, therapies, doctors, leadership, and estates and facilities – managed to drop in at some point. Thank you to everyone who came along to mark this special occasion and who continues to be a part of Mildmay’s story.
