During a short visit to the UK, Dr Yvonne E. M. Karamagi, Executive Director of Mildmay Uganda Group, and Dr Ronald Mulebeke, Director of the Mildmay Research Centre, spent a day at Mildmay in London.

They presented the strategic priorities for Mildmay Uganda, the challenges on the ground, and the opportunities ahead - and we discussed how our partnership will grow in 2026.

For over two decades, Mildmay Uganda has delivered integrated, community‑centred healthcare across the country. Its vision is “Communities transformed for sustainable health.” Its mission is to empower communities through sustainable programming, quality healthcare, human resource development, and research that improves quality of life - strengthening health systems, empowering communities, and widening access to care for the most vulnerable.

Mildmay Uganda’s integrated model combines clinical care, training, research, and community development - ensuring services are effective, evidence‑based, responsive to local needs, and built to last.

Core Programmes & Areas of Impact

Through Mildmay Uganda Hospital, the Mildmay Institute of Health Sciences and the Mildmay Research Centre, Mildmay Uganda Group Programmes focus on

  • Disease Prevention & Management: Mildmay Uganda delivers HIV care, non‑communicable diseases management, and diagnostics. The programme supports over 120,000 people living with HIV, including more than 7,000 children; reaches tens of thousands of adolescents and children at risk; and strengthens local care through support to 112 health facilities and 12,000 community health workers.

  • Health Systems Strengthening: Through capacity‑building, governance support, and improved health information systems, Mildmay Uganda mentors healthcare workers, improves supply chains, and strengthens facility‑level management to ensure high‑quality, equitable, sustainable care.

  • Global Health Security: Mildmay Uganda plays a frontline role in outbreak preparedness and response, including infection prevention and control, risk communication, and coordinated emergency planning. Experience spans COVID‑19, Ebola, and other infectious threats - helping protect communities and build systems‑resilience.

  • Disability Programming: A holistic approach includes prevention, rehabilitation, social inclusion, and community‑led support, with a focus on children and households experiencing multiple vulnerabilities.

  • Household Livelihoods & Economic Strengthening: Recognising the link between health and socio‑economic stability, Mildmay Uganda supports vulnerable households through economic empowerment, social protection, and community‑led initiatives that reduce poverty and strengthen resilience.

A New Chapter: Expanding Integrated Services

In line with UNAIDS’ call for integrated, community‑centred services, we are entering a new chapter of international partnership in Uganda. Building on decades of specialist HIV care and community health expertise, we are collaborating with Mildmay Uganda Hospital and local partners - including the British High Commission and the Ugandan Ministry of Health - to expand access to integrated services in regions of greatest need.

We aim to develop a network of regional health centres, beginning with a pilot in Mbale, Eastern Uganda, and then extending to areas of greatest need. Each centre will offer locally tailored diagnostics, treatment, and comprehensive support, bringing care closer to home for children, families, and communities.

To achieve these ambitious plans, we are seeking capital investment and philanthropic support from partners in the UK and globally.

We look forward to sharing further updates as the programme progresses in 2026. Through this partnership, we will continue to transform communities, strengthen health systems, and empower individuals to live healthier, more dignified lives.
