International Nurses Day 2025: Celebrating the Heart of Mildmay

Updated: 29 minutes ago

Heart shaped post it notes with messages to our nurses

Each year on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the world pauses to honour nurses everywhere for their care, skill, and dedication.

At Mildmay Hospital, International Nurses Day is an opportunity to celebrate our extraordinary nursing team - those working today and those who shaped our proud legacy.

Our nurses and healthcare support workers are at the heart of everything we do. From caring for people living with complex HIV-related conditions to supporting individuals who have experienced homelessness, they offer far more than clinical care. They are educators, advocates, counsellors, and constant companions in our patients’ recovery journeys.

Mildmay’s nursing legacy dates back over 150 years. From staffing Doncaster Royal Infirmary and the British Seaman’s Hospital in Malta, to training and deploying Mildmay Deaconesses to serve across the UK and internationally - in China, Japan, Africa, India, Palestine, Malta, and Egypt - Mildmay nurses have long played a vital role in delivering compassionate, expert care wherever it is needed.

Today, our diverse nursing team reflects the global nature of healthcare. They bring a wealth of experience and empathy from around the world to serve those most in need here in London.

This Nurses Day, we’re honouring that legacy and especially celebrating our incredible team. The nursing team is inviting all staff, volunteers, patients, and visitors to join them for a celebratory tea party in the Catherine Ward Day Room. In addition, our Chaplain Bernie Devine SP. Will be arranging a chapel service for our nursing team on the following Wednesday.

These are moments for our whole community to come together, raise a cup (of tea) in gratitude, and recognise the tireless work of the nurses and healthcare support workers who uphold our values of dignity, inclusion, and excellence every single day.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all Registered Nurses, Healthcare Support Workers and student nurses for their amazing work, dedication, and compassionate care for all our patients at Mildmay.”
– Teri Milewska, Matron (Registered Manager and Lead Nurse)

While International Nurses Day is just one day in the year, it’s a reminder of the ongoing commitment our nursing team shows day in and day out. They are not only skilled professionals but also the beating heart of Mildmay’s mission: to care for people with complex health needs who might otherwise fall through the cracks.

So today, and every day, we say thank you.

Happy International Nurses Day 2025!
