International Men’s Day: Raising Awareness for Men’s Health and Well-Being

November 19th is International Men’s Day, a global awareness day that highlights the challenges men face, such as mental health struggles, homelessness, suicide, and violence.

International Men’s Day (IMD) also celebrates the positive contributions that men make to their families, communities, and society as a whole.

Men encounter a range of health challenges that deserve more attention. Research shows that:

  • Men are three times more likely to die by suicide than women

  • One in three men experiences domestic violence

  • Men, on average, have a shorter life expectancy, living 4-5 years less than women

  • Men are nearly twice as likely to develop lung cancer and heart disease compared to women

It is crucial to acknowledge the harmful behaviours of some men, which have rightfully led to movements like #MeToo. However, this should not overshadow the fact that men and boys also face significant challenges that need addressing. Recognising the harm caused by some does not diminish the reality that many men struggle with mental health issues, violence, and other hardships. Men and boys deserve support and understanding as they navigate these difficulties. International Men’s Day offers an opportunity to address both the challenges men face and the positive contributions they make, without overlooking the importance of accountability for harmful actions.

Founded in 1999 by Dr Jerome Teelucksingh, a lecturer from the University of the West Indies, International Men’s Day aims to improve men’s and boys’ health, promote gender equality, and highlight positive male role models.

IMD events have grown to include seminars, health screenings, Movember fundraisers, and various community gatherings. It’s also a day to acknowledge the men who serve our communities - police officers, firefighters, healthcare professionals, and others - who protect and support us daily. While IMD is observed in different ways, the overarching goal is to raise awareness of men’s issues and celebrate their contributions.

At Mildmay, we recognise the importance of raising awareness about men’s health and supporting those facing challenging circumstances. Together, we can work towards creating healthier, more supportive communities for everyone.
