Global Connections: A Visit from the Mildmay Institute of Health Sciences

Dr Joseph Mwaka and Dr Simon Rackstraw

We were delighted to welcome Dr Joseph Mwaka on a visit to Mildmay Hospital today.

Dr Mwaka, who serves as Research Grants Officer at the Mildmay Institute of Health Sciences (MIHS) in Uganda, joined us during a short visit to Oxford University (where he gained a Master's Degree) and took the opportunity to connect with our team, learn more about Mildmay’s work in the UK and present his work in Uganda.

During his visit to Mildmay Hospital, Dr Mwaka met with our Medical Director, Dr Simon Rackstraw, and Junior Doctor, Dr Divyan Moodley, for a wide-ranging discussion. The conversation highlighted our shared history and evolving missions in healthcare.

The Mildmay Institute of Health Sciences is a leading institution in Uganda, offering accredited academic and professional training programmes for healthcare workers. It focuses on developing compassionate and highly skilled professionals, with particular strengths in HIV care, palliative medicine, and health system leadership, values closely aligned with our own.

Although Mildmay in the UK and MIHS now operate independently, both institutions share roots in the 19th-century Mildmay mission. This visit was a reminder of our common heritage and the enduring global relevance of Mildmay’s founding values: compassion, excellence, and service to the most marginalised.

This marks the first time a representative from Mildmay Uganda has visited Mildmay Hospital in the UK, something long overdue. We hope this encouraging visit might be the beginning of further exchanges between our organisations, particularly as we look ahead to new collaborative projects in Uganda, including the development of health centres focused on emerging needs such as palliative care.

As we mark the 40th anniversary of Mildmay Hospital’s reopening during the HIV crisis, we look forward to deepening these global connections and exploring new ways to collaborate across borders in the pursuit of high-quality, inclusive healthcare.
