Recollections from a Mildmay Nurse from the 1970s

Hi everyone

I was tidying up the info@mildmay.org inbox and came across an email from a former Mildmay nurse from 2017. I don't think anyone ever responded, so I wrote to her - Juliet Priest as she was back then, and she was really pleased to be back in touch with the Mildmay Family. She permitted me to add her recollections to the Staff Stories page on our website. So much was lost, misplaced, or put away when the NHS closed Mildmay in 1982, and we are slowly rebuilding our collective memory.

This is Juliet's Staff Stories page

Reconnecting with Mildmay's origins at St Jude's, Islington.

Here's a preview of a social media/blog post that will go out to the public later this week:

You may know that Mildmay’s origins stretch back to the mid-1860s and the work carried out by the Reverend William Pennefather - the vicar of St Judes, and his wife Catherine.

St Judes, which was located in Mildmay Park, Islington, was a lively Victorian church of over 1,000 people. William developed a number of projects known collectively as Mildmay Institutions, providing spiritual guidance and care for the sick.

Our Registered and Compliance Manager, Teri, WhatsApped this message to me yesterday:

"What a morning!! Remember I told you my crazy story about St Jude's Church and my inspiration for the homeless project? Well, I finally decided to go to a service at St Jude's this morning.

Do you or someone you know, have an experience of Mildmay that you would like to share?

Mildmay has been caring for people since the 1860s and in that time thousands of people have passed through our doors. Each one of them had their own unique experience of the hospital and its dedicated staff.

Former patients and their friends and relatives, and current and former staff (including our chaplains) have already been sharing their stories with us. In this way, we are adding to and enriching Mildmay's historical archive.

If you have a story you would like to share, we would love to hear it!

It can be a brief anecdote or a longer piece. It can be about any memory at all that is linked somehow to Mildmay. You can send it to us directly at info@milmday.org, or by using our contact form, but you can also post your story in this forum for our members to read.

If you give us permission, we can add…
