HIV/AIDS culture, and care.

Visited New York to learn about the care of children living with HIV/AIDS

Negotiated with the NHS that Mildmay Nursing Staff should be on the NHS terms and conditions of service as nurses were unwilling to work for Mildmay as they would lose their NHS status & benefits. As a result all cadres of staff at Mildmay and Mildmay International were put on the NHS payroll.

Conducted HIV/AIDS Training for all staff at Mildmay Mission Hospital as we were pioneering HIV/AIDS care in the UK, as well as for the young chronically sick patients who would overlap with the incoming HIV/AIDS patients.

Set up a support programme for parents of HIV positive men and women.

Awarded scholarships for relevant staff to go to East Africa in order to develop appropriate training programmes that would enable London patients to be able to return home.

With Dr Veronica Moss developed Mildmay’s International training work.

Developed the sister company Mildmay International and oversaw the move to their Southend headquarters.

Whilst conducting training programmes in Uganda, was asked by the Ministry of Health to provide HIV/AIDS services similar to those at Mildmay Mission Hospital. Visited Uganda to discuss what was needed.

Worked with the Ugandan Ministry of Health, British Government and Mildmay to get funding, purchase land and draw up a three way agreement for the provision of Tertiary Services for Adults & Children living with HIV/ AIDS.

Negotiated the project underspend on the capital budget to develop accommodation for the International Study Centre.

Recruited and trained all international Study Centre Staff

Provided much needed training for health care professionals in the rural areas by developing a Mobile Clinical Training Team. Then negotiated funding for all training activities.

Provided funding for patients (including children) who cannot afford treatment by setting up a ‘Hardship Fund’, which raised approximately £180,000 a year.

Piloted day care for Children living with HIV/AIDS to see what was needed for a designated Children’s HIV/AIDS palliative care centre. The pilot was run in The Mildmay Centre’s Noah’s Ark.

Oversaw the purchase of 11 acres for additional land for the Children’s work.

Designed and developed a three-phase Day Care centre to be built on the land purchased by Mildmay International, and adjacent to The Mildmay Centre, and raised over £2 million from Christian sources for the capital and first three phases.

Secured Global Fund funding to continue and develop the work.

Piloted hospital care for treatment of acute episodes where children needed 24 hr care. Raised funds for a designated children’s ward, and later for a second ward that would be opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Developed Rural Day Care Programmes (17 Districts), Emergency medical clinics for the IDP camps, and training programmes for local HIV/AIDS Paediatric doctors and nurses.

Went on, at the request of the Ministry of Health, to improve hospital care for children with severe malnutrition in the main Government Hospital.
