What does Mildmay's logo represent?

A red-headed female character pondering Mildmay's logo

The symbol featured in the Mildmay logo was designed in 1992, the centenary year of the opening of our first, dedicated hospital building in East London.

A firm of design consultants kindly donated the new symbol to the charity for use in the Centenary Appeal. We have been using it ever since, and it remains, alongside the Mildmay name, a strong and recognisable brand of quality care in the countries in which we work and beyond. But what does the symbol actually represent?

The designers who created the symbol, and those who worked at Mildmay in 1992 and who helped develop it, saw it as a depiction of several different but complementary concepts. So to different eyes, in different settings and depending on an individual’s personal experience of Mildmay, it can mean and be interpreted as many things, including:

  • one person caring for another

A sneak peek at a recently found postcard of Old Mildmay

A postcard of the 1898 Mildmay Hospital

We recently came across this postcard on eBay of the old 1898 Mildmay Mission Hospital.

It has an Edwardian stamp on it (I believe) so is quite old. There is a sweet and lovely message on the card from a patient. I've reproduced both sides here, before posting it more widely on social media next week.

Getting a preview of news and things is one of the benefits of membership so expect more things to turn up here in future, from event notifications to stories to found objects. I hope you will also contribute...

"The Mildmay kitchens of old"

Edwardian photograph of staff working by a cast-iron kitchen range.

I've already posted this photo on our social media, and as blog posts on both our websites, where I commented a bit on the image, but I thought I would post it here too. in future, I will post more images here that we unearth. From time to time people send us items related to Mildmay, and these will go here too.

Did you know we have two websites? This one, and our NHS-branded hospital website, which is primarily for our service-users and healthcare professionals. Although we are an independent charity, we provide services to the NHS so we are allowed to use the logo.

All this is to encourage our members to share too, whether it be a story, a photo, a booklet - whatever.
