Rehabilitation
All children will receive help through educational support, play therapy, nutritional care, physiotherapy, drug adherence support, music and dance, assistance in the form of food supplies and school materials.
Approximately 80% of children admitted show signs of malnutrition – the problems they face are not only disease related but are worsened by poverty and child neglect. On admission to day care all children are provided with highly nutritious meals to help boost their immune system.
Children admitted commonly exhibit delayed milestones (body mass, coordination, speech). HIV and associated opportunistic infections can also severely affect the nervous system resulting in neurological disorders and muscular-skeletal problems. Physiotherapy can be administered in a variety of ways whether through exercises, massage and especially the encouragement of physical play. The physiotherapy team will commonly see 80 children per day, working with them to strengthen muscles, improving their balance, stability and coordination so that they can walk unaided
Training of the child’s carer is crucial to ensuring the child’s ongoing health once they are discharged from Mildmay.
