Our Christian driving force
Mildmay's original philosophy of sharing Christ's love amongst the sick and vulnerable (witness our founder's 'Good Samaritan' response to the 1866 cholera crisis) is alive and well today.
Our strong corporate allegiance to the Christian faith is reinforced by many individual expressions of God's love in reaching out to people in need.
Patients through the years have described how this permeating faith has lent a powerful extra dimension to our care. At our centres in the UK and Uganda, we offer strength in depth through an interdenominational team, in which our chaplains provide a prime spiritual focus to our holistic philosophy. Yet our approach is distinctly inclusive and we successfully work with people of other faiths or no faith whom we respect, and who in turn respect us for our unconditional professionalism.
Our changed approach is clear if you visit our UK hospital. Gone are the Biblical texts that once adorned the internal walls. And gone are the visiting missioners. While our faith is no less intense and no less passionate, the heavy style of evangelism that characterised a bygone era has been refocused into a more subtle ministry appropriate for today's HIV+AIDS context. We believe that the sick, the frightened and the vulnerable need a safe haven - one where they will be accepted, not judged and not 'preached at'.
We will continue to reshape and refocus our services as needs dictate. But our Christian ethos will remain central to all our plans and hopes.

CHAA's chair, The Reverend Alan Bain, has previously visited Mildmay programmes in Uganda and produced World AIDS Day reports for us in Christian and local broadcast and print media.
